Final Curtain

Smoltz to have season-ending surgery. I presume that this is the end of the line.

I am genuinely sad as I type this. It's like losing a thoroughbred mid-race. I don't wanna talk to nobody about nothin' for like three hours.

I'm really sorry to hear that. But, if anybody can make that recovery at 41, I think it will be Smoltz.

Craig, did you listen to the press conference? Smoltz was very upbeat. He talked about being able to resume some of his daily daily activities, like sleeping and playing golf. And that this was not the end. He was not ready to retire and in fact talked about getting ready for spring training next year. This hinges on a successful surgery and his desire to return. But he is the most competitive person I have seen play baseball. He will back. If Randy Johnson can come back, Smoltz will.
