Middlin' Stakes

Jayson Stark (and many others) are waxing gloomily about the Rays this morning.

I know they want to win it and everything, but I think we can all agree that even if they don't, they are a lock for the wild card, right?

I go back and forth on the wild card. I love the chaos afoot in the NL, but I would really like to see the Rays-Sox series have some serious Thunderdome implications, wouldn't you?

Did you see what ESPN had on the front page all morning? About how Tampa's season has taken a "gloomy turn"? Ridiculous.

Surprisingly, the Red Sox actually have a lower magic number for the wild card than the Rays because they have a win in-hand.

Still though, it's something like 4-5 to eliminate the Blue Jays and Yankees, and 6-7 to eliminate the Twins. The Rays have 14 games left, so I think the chances of them blowing the wild card are slim to none, and slim is heading to the door as we speak.
